Under its leader Carl Hagen, the far-right Progress Party won 26 seats in the country's 165-seat parliament in elections in 2001.
Mr Hagen and his supporters are hostile to immigration, and blame many social and economic problems on immigrants. They want to divert more money to pensions and healthcare for Norwegians.
Mr Hagen has carved out a role as an extreme libertarian, and is certainly no heir to Vidkun Quisling, who served as Hitler's puppet during the Nazi-occupation of Norway.
