The anti-immigration Northern League led by Umberto Bossi is a member of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's coalition government.
Another far-right party is the National Alliance, which includes Mussolini's granddaughter Alessandra. The Alliance occupies more traditional nationalist ground and draws support from many poorer regions in Italy.
Led by Gianfranco Fini, it has ditched many of its more extreme ideas and avoids Mr Bossi's hardline anti-immigration stance.
