Isle of Wight
Seaclose Park, Newport
3 June

After 32 years, the Isle of Wight Festival returned with the Charlatans headlining its opening Rock Island event over the Golden Jubilee holiday.

They followed in the footsteps of The Doors, The Who, Moody Blues and Joan Baez, who played the island's last event in 1970 - the year of the first Glastonbury festival.

Ash, Starsailor and Robert Plant also played the Rock Island show, which kicked off a fortnight of musical events around the island.

However, far less than half the 25,000 tickets were sold - with attendance estimated at between 8,000 and 10,000.
