Newcastle and the north-east of England
Newcastle's most recent success has been The Lighthouse Family. Tunde Baiyewu and Paul Tucker met while studying in the city, and became one of the UK's biggest-selling acts of the late 1990s. Sting (pictured) was born in Wallsend, but he is now more associated with Amazonian rain forests than the fog on the Tyne. Lindisfarne flew the Geordie flag during the 1970s, but inexplicably decided to re-record their biggest hit with then-footballer-of-the-moment Paul Gascoigne in 1990. West of Newcastle are one of the pop's most-respected groups - Durham's Prefab Sprout have built up a loyal following thanks to their quirky hits.
