Manchester
Manchester has dominated British music for the last two decades. Oasis (Noel and Liam Gallagher pictured) are currently Britain's biggest band, but The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays also figured strongly in the 1990s, fuelled by hedonistic nights in the now-defunct Hacienda nightclub - owned by New Order. The Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets, The Fall and The Verve are all Manchester favourites, while club acts 808 State and the Chemical Brothers started here as well. Punk heroes The Buzzcocks came from Manchester, as did The Smiths. The Bee Gees - from the Isle of Man - first made their name here in the late 1960s.
