Holly Johnson
Liverpool's music didn't stop with The Beatles. Much-hyped 1980s group Frankie Goes To Hollywood came from the city, and last year frontman Holly Johnson (pictured) released his first solo album since he discovered he had Aids.
Also born in the 1980s were guitar rockers Echo and The Bunnymen, who reformed at the end of the 1990s. Some may try to forget another Liverpool star of the 1980s - pop singer Sonia.
Merseyside's recent successes include The Farm and the Boo Radleys. Cast, The Lightning Seeds and Space are among Liverpool's musical ambassadors now, along with the nightclub Cream.
