Bristol
Trip-hop, the Bristol sound, was inescapable during the 1990s. The debut album by Massive Attack (pictured), Blue Lines, a mix of soul, hip-hop and dub kickstarted it all in 1991. By the time of the band's second album Protection in 1994, rapper Tricky had quit to start his own solo career. One of the studio engineers on Blue Lines, Geoff Barrow, started his own group - Portishead. 1998 saw Massive Attack's third album Mezzanine hit the shops. However, a year later, founder member Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles left the band, although Grant "Daddy G" Marshall and Robert "3D" Del Naja continue to work together.
