Birmingham and the West Midlands
Birmingham's famous sons include heavy metal legends Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, both formed in the late 1960s. Reggae has also been a city trademark, thanks to the success of UB40 and Steel Pulse. Fellow Birmingham acts Dexy's Midnight Runners and Fine Young Cannibals both had 1980s hits, while Duran Duran (Simon Le Bon pictured) dominated the decade. Recent stars include Ocean Colour Scene and Sneaker Pimps. Elsewhere, The Specials' ska sounds put Coventry on the map in the early 1980s, while Pop Will Eat Itself (Wolverhampton) and The Wonder Stuff (Stourbridge) were cult 1990s favourites.
