The UK Conservatives, the main opposition party, were quick to go on the offensive over Enron even though they too took sponsorship from the energy giant.

Now the party says it regrets accepting that money and insists Tory policy was not influenced by the contributions.

The role of Lord Wakeham, a former Conservative cabinet minister, has provided another connection between the company and the party.
