Deutsche Telekom has struggled with a growing debt burden of $50bn (£37bn), having seen its share of the home market drop since it was opened to competition. The owner of the UK's One2One and Europe's largest ISPs, T-Online, failed to take over Telecom Italia or merge with France Telecom before moving into the US, where it is trying to acquire Voicestream.
