The US raised $16.86bn (£11.24bn) when it sold a total of 422 permits for local mobile phone licences (based on broadband PCS, a different technical standard from 3G). The biggest individual winners were Verizon Wireless, a joint venture with Vodafone, Cingular Wireless, a joint venture of BellSouth and SBC Communications, and AT&T Wireless.
