UK
The UK government was the first to auction mobile phone licenses, raising £22.4bn ($33.6bn) which is being used to reduce government debt. Five companies won: the four existing operators (Vodafone, BT Cellnet, Orange, and One2One) with one newcomer - TIW, a Canadian company in which Hutchison owns a stake.
