Italy
The Italian government came away with less than half of the £15bn ($25bn) it had hoped for, after BT withdrew from the auction, leaving five firms bidding for the same number of licences. The five winners were Telecom Italia Mobile; Vodafone-controlled Omnitel; Wind, a France Telecom joint venture; Telefonica's IPSE 2000;and Hutchison's Andala.
