The first plane flies into the upper floors of the north tower of the World Trade Center at about 0845 Eastern Daylight Time (1245 GMT) - the middle of the rush hour in the city.

Ordinarily 50,000 people would be working in the World Trade Center though not all of them are believed to have got to work at the time of the attacks. Up to 100,00 tourists visit the towers daily.
