United Airlines Flight 93
Crashed: 10:03 EDT 80 miles (128 km) southeast of Pittsburgh
Killed: 44, including five cabin crew and two pilots
Hijackers: It is believed the hijackers were armed with knives and a box they claimed was a bomb. Their intended target was probably Washington DC. The FBI named the suspected hijackers as Ahmed Alhaznawi, Ahmed Alnami, Ziad Jarrahi and Saeed Alghamdi. On board: At least 10 passengers and two crew members made mobile phone calls to relatives and the emergency services. One of those was sales manager Jeremy Glick who told his wife that he and some others had taken a secret vote and had decided to tackle the hijackers. Another passenger, Thomas Burnett told his wife: "I know we're all going to die... There's three of us who are going to do something about it." According to one call made from the plane the passengers voted on whether to rush the terrorists in an attempt to retake the aircraft. Recorded cockpit conversations suggest that the hijackers crashed the plane when the passengers were on the verge of overcoming them. |
