Bush Triumph

George W Bush finally claimed the presidency on 13 December. After a remarkable election battle, he praised Mr Gore and also emphasised the need for reconciliation and unity.

"I was elected not to serve one party but one nation," he said. "After a difficult election, we must put politics behind us... I am optimistic that we can change the tone in Washington."
