It was a tough night for George Bush. First he was celebrating victory. But less than half an hour after Al Gore called to concede defeat, he received another phone call.

It was the vice president again, this time retracting his words. With his victory speech in hand, Mr Bush was irritated.

"You don't have to get snippy about this," the vice president told a flabbergasted Mr Bush.
