After 36 days of anguish, Al Gore finally conceded defeat. Mr Gore said he strongly disagreed with the Supreme Court ruling, but he urged all Americans to unite behind Mr Bush.

"This has been an extraordinary election. But it's very closeness can serve to remind us that we are one people with a shared history and a shared destiny," he said.
