Nobody expected the US election battle would continue for more than a month after election night.

After multiple recounts and tortuous legal battles that took the race all the way to the US Supreme Court, Republican George Bush finally won the day.

But Democrat Al Gore won the popular vote, leaving Mr Bush with the challenge to assert his authority and unite the country behind him.
