The UK sent troops to bolster UN forces in Sierra Leone in 2000, but rebel attacks continued. In Guinea, the local population turned against the refugees, as hit-and-run raids from Sierra Leone and Liberia mounted, destroying villages and killing dozens of civilians.
The Guinean Government blamed Charles Taylor, but another previously unknown group said some of the raids were the work of Guinea's opposition. Liberia accused Guinea of harbouring Liberian rebels from Ulimo-K in Macenta, and mounted a massive cross border operation.
