Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta is the intellectual and cultural centre of Java, and has the status of “special region” because of its historical significance. It is the power base of Amien Rais, leader of the National Mandate Party. Once the site of the court of the ancient Hindu Mataram empire, the present-day Sultan of Yogyakarta - the 53-year-old Sultan Hamengkubuwono X - is still in charge. He emerged as an interim compromise candidate for the presidency in the event of post-election political paralysis, after he left the ruling Golkar party. His father played an important role in the struggle against the Dutch and later became a Vice-President under former President Suharto, who himself fought in a key battle here against the Dutch.
