Steep rises in the price of fuel and electricity in May 1998 sparked several days of clashes between students and the security forces in Medan, the capital of north Sumatra, and Indonesia's third largest city.

It has a significant Chinese Indonesian population which became a target during worker riots in 1994 as well as more recently, as a result of the regional economic crisis.

Medan is one of the main gateways into Indonesia with close trading links to Singapore and Malaysia across the Malacca Straits.
