Sir Elton John

Sir Elton vowed never to attend the awards again after being presented with the 1986 outstanding contribution award by Conservative Party chairman Norman Tebbit.

Reportedly upset at missing out to Phil Collins for the best male prize, he raged: "I would rather have been on holiday. It was a joke, I promise you. I'm never going to one again, it's just a load of rubbish."

He later relaxed his views, and won best male in 1991, as well as another outstanding contribution prize in 1995.
