Sir Cliff Richard

Sir Cliff won best male at the first ceremony in 1982, as well as at the original Britannia Awards ceremony in 1977. In 1989 he was given an outstanding contribution award to mark his long service to the industry, but it wasn't all plain sailing.

He had to make an on-stage apology to Education Secretary Kenneth Baker, who was booed by the crowd for appearing to promote the new Brit School for Performing Arts and Technology in south London. Still going strong today, the school offers specialist training in performance, production design, media law and entertainment management. The Brit Awards shows help fund the running of the school.
