 = Candidate elected
Description

Comprising the 76 parliamentary constituencies in the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Merseyside together with the unitary authorities of Blackburn, Blackpool, Halton and Warrington.

At the 1997 general election Labour won 64 seats, the Conservatives 9, the Liberal Democrats 2. In addition Martin Bell won Tatton as an Independent.

The North West is one of the 3 English regions where Labour polled a plurality of votes even in 1992. Although the swing to Labour in 1997 was slightly below the national average it could not save the Conservatives from losing 19 seats. The Liberal Democrats have some support based on local government success, but this is not one of their strongest regions.
