EDUCATION LEAGUE TABLES

Explanation of the results and special symbols

England primary schools

The tables show the results achieved by schools in the Key Stage 2 national curriculum tests in England - those taken by pupils in the final year of primary school at the age of 11.

The figures relate to all local authority-maintained primary and middle schools with pupils eligible for assessment at the time of the tests in May.

The Department for Education - which provides the figures - excludes special schools, pupil referral units, hospital schools and independent schools.

What is in the lists

The first column of figures shows the schools' rankings within their local education authority on the basis of the aggregate score of their results in English, mathematics and science.

The next three columns show the results for those subjects. The figures are the percentage of eligible pupils who achieved Level 4 or above - the standard expected for their age.

The results in these tables are rounded to the nearest whole number except in the case of local education authority averages, which are given to one decimal place.

Where more than one school has the same score, they are further ranked on the number of pupils eligible to take the tests - on the basis that it is harder to get more pupils achieving a high performance - then alphabetically.

Special symbols

SS Small schools with 10 or fewer eligible pupils. They are included for completeness but no results are published for them.

NA means the improvement measure for the year in question is not appropriate for publication - for example, no results were published for one or more subjects.

$ means the school failed to provide the test results for a subject and @ means the results are not available for reasons beyond the school's control.

School pages

On the individual pages the results for each subject are again reported. The figures after them in brackets show the percentage of pupils failing to achieve a level in the test due to what the DfEE calls "absence or disapplication".

The red bars alongside these figures allow you to see at a glance how well this school did in each subject, compared to the best in the country (100%).

There is also an "improvement measure" showing the aggregate scores for this year and the previous three years, again with at-a-glance comparison bars ("top" in this case being 300).

For all these figures there are, on the right of the table, local and national averages.

Finally, the "context" information shows how many pupils were eligible for assessment and, of those, what percentage had statements of special educational need.

You can then see how the school ranks against others in the area and, with a click, go to its place in the full list.
