The Saloon was once the inner courtyard of the House, into which carriages would be driven. Guests then entered the House and ascended via stone stairs on the outside of the building. There were no landings and in making their way from one end of the House to the other it was necessary to pass through from room to room, hence the four poster bed.
The walls of the Saloon are clustered with portraits of the Spencer family some dating back to and beyond 1643, when Henry Spencer was created Earl of Sunderland by Charles 1st after he lent the king 10,000 to conduct the civil war. In 1743 the Hon John Spencer inherited the house but did not live long to enjoy it. In 1746 he died and his son became the 1st Earl Spencer. Louis, Viscount Althorp, born in 1994 will become the 10th Earl Spencer.
