The Marlborough Room is named after the Spencer's greatest benefactor, Sarah Duchess of Marlborough, wife of the 1st Duke of Marlborough. Famed for her fiery temper and striking good looks she was a skilled business woman who is reputed to have leant money to the Bank of England in times of crisis. The rosewood state dining table and forty matching chairs were made in 1800 by George Seddon. The room which has served as both a library and a billiard room is now hung with some of the House's most famous paintings including works by Salvatore Rosa, Carlo Marratta, Rubens and Guercino.
