Since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, Althorp has become known across the world but before that tragic event the House was well known to connoisseurs on account of the beauty of its setting and the magnificence of its contents. The history of Althorp is the history of a family. The Spencers have lived and died here for nearly five centuries and 20 generations. The original Elizabethan red brick house was faced with grey tiles in 18th century and can appear stark in contrast with the adjacent honey-coloured stable block. In its heyday, the building housed 100 horses and 40 grooms. It is now the setting for the centre for visitors.
