Planet of the Apes has been on release for two weeks

Planet Of The Apes has held on to the number one spot in the UK box office chart for a second week.

Director Tim Burton's science fiction adventure, starring Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter, notched up a further £2.3m from Friday to Sunday.

Its takings were considerably down on the £5m for the previous week but it was still enough to keep animal caper Cats and Dogs at number two with takings of £1m.

Planet Of The Apes also beat off competition from new comedy release Heartbreakers, starring Sigourney Weaver, which opened at number three after taking £751,754.

Planet Of The Apes is described by Burton as a "re-imagining" of the now cult 1968 original movie and maintained its chart lead despite a battering of bad reviews.

Rush Hour 2 dropped one place to number four in its fourth week while Shrek held firm at number five.

Cop comedy Rush Hour 2 sees Hong Kong star Jackie Chan reprieve his high action role alongside Chris Tucker.

Sigourney Weaver plays a conniving gold-digger in Heartbreakers

The film made £615,000 in its fourth week of release. Animated comedy fantasy Shrek has been in the top five in the charts since it opened nine weeks ago.

Last weekend saw it add £365,829 to its overall takings in the UK of £26m.

Jurassic Park III - the third outing in the hit dinosaur adventure series - fell to sixth position from its fourth place of last week.

The film made £354,602 last weekend, bringing its six-week total to £16.8m.

It was followed by two more new releases, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles at number seven and Lucky Break at number eight.

Crocodile Dundee took £354,000. The film marks the third outing for Australian comedian Paul Hogan in the role that transformed him from Australian TV celebrity to international film star.

Josie and the Pussycats satirises manufactured pop stars

Lucky Break, which took £348,000, is the second film from Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo.

Another comedy, it centres around a bunch of convicts plotting the perfect escape route and stars James Nesbitt and Olivia Williams.

In the bottom half of the top 15 movies in the UK, Josie and the Pussycats - an update of the 70s comic book - came in at number 13 after making £37,000.
