Edwin Aldrin on the Moon

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today is the fortieth anniversary of man's first landing on the moon.

The crew that took part in this historic occasion forty years ago were three astronauts called Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin.

On the 16th of July, 1969, their mission left planet Earth and on the 20th of July 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to land on the moon, and was then followed by Edwin Aldrin.

It was after he landed that Neil Armstrong said his famous words "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

Since then, Neil Armstrong has become known all around the world although this fame has not really made him as happy as you might think.

He has stopped giving interviews or autographs because of the way some people treated him.

A few people sold his autograph and one barber even sold Neil's hair after cutting it, for 3000 dollars!

But even after 40 years, the story of Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 space mission still fascinates and excites people.

What do you think of man's first landing on the moon? Write to us in English!
