Every year 1000 people in the United Kingdom die after waiting for an
organ transplant.
In BBC Xtra English, Amber and Liliane take a look at what is being done to prevent further deaths.
The United Kingdom has one of the lowest organ donation rates in Europe.
Many reasons have been suggested why this is so.
In some countries it is assumed that an organ would be donated after a person's death, unless they have already made it clear they do not want to before they die.
This is called presumed consent. Hospital authorities presume you want to have organs donated.
You would have to opt-out of this system if you did not want to donate.
The U.K. Organ Donation Taskforce, which is a committee that advises the government, has reported that there is little evidence that a system of presumed consent would increase donations.
The concept of 'gift' was important according to research by the taskforce.
That would be undermined by a presumed consent system.
Trust in doctors might also be undermined.
The British Medical Association (BMA) does not agree with the findings of the taskforce.
The BMA agrees that a presumed consent system is not a panacea, but it could help increase organ donation by about 10 or 15 percent.
