Welcome to

Today John and Inas talk about the auction of a truffle!
At an auction in Tokyo, one white truffle - an extremely rare edible fungi - has been sold for a very large sum.
The truffle (about 1 kilogram in weight) was sold for 30 thousand U.S. dollars!
The proud new owner of the truffle intends to eat it with just a bowl of rice!
However, BBC reporter Duncan Bartlett notes that truffle prices were way down on last year, suggesting that the credit crunch has bitten into the truffle market.
Tickets to the auction cost hundreds of dollars each, and guests were served truffle sauce at the auction dinner.
White truffles have been described by one famous chef as the diamond of the kitchen.
They are almost as expensive as precious stones because they are extremely hard to find, growing underground beneath certain trees.
Do you think it's outrageous that people should be spending so much money on just one special thing to eat, or is it any of our business what people spend their money on? Write to us in English.

WOOOOOW unbelievable, spending a lot of money to have one dish. I'm totally against this, we can use our extra money to help poor people who are starving and their income is less than 2$ per day not waste it like that.

I think that its not acceptable for the rich people to spend a huge number of money just for a little rare food, because we have a huge number of starving people in the world that need money to eat.
Aram, Lebanon
I think that people are free to spend their money how they want. But at the same time it is a kind of selfishness to spend such a sum at the same time to know that many people in other places in the world don't have even bread. It would be more moral to give them that money as a gift.
Alahad, UK
I think this man who has bought the truffle just wants to be famous and have people talk about him. However, I don't like this type of thinking. Thanks.
