Welcome to
BBC Xtra English.
Today John and Louay talk about id cards for overseas students.
Under tougher immigration rules, all overseas students coming to the UK will need biometric identity cards.
The Home Office says the changing rules are part of its efforts to clamp down on bogus students and colleges.
The new rules apply to students from outside the European Union.
Students will have to give their fingerprints to get an id card.
International students are an important source of income for universities, particularly as they pay higher fees than UK students.
According to the university watchdog, the Quality Assurance Agency, some universities are now financially dependent on them.
BBC Xtra English met some students to ask their views:
some students are in favour of the id cards because they have similar systems in their own countries;
some students are concerned about the authorities holding so much personal data.
