Scientist looking into microscope

Welcome to BBC Xtra English.

Today John and Liliane talk about an interesting new way to fight cancer.

British scientists have developed a purple tomato that is the same colour as other fruits like blackberries and cranberries.

They believe that that the purple pigment is very beneficial to human beings as it contains many anti-cancer properties.

The scientists do this by genetically modifying crops which means they change the actual genes of the crops being grown.

People who support genetically modifying crops feel that it helps looking for ways of preventing cancer.

Sometimes scientists are able to come up with significant new developments that can help us in the future.

Other people are worried that there may be negative aspects to genetically modified crops.

They believe it is still too early for us to say if these crops are totally safe as they might contain things that are harmful to us.

Are you comfortable eating genetically modified crops? Write to us in English.

Use of genetically modified crops to some extent if the studies was made very well becomes the best choice because the cancer is spread all the world and sometimes for unknown reason which make people fear about that.

Dirgham Ahmed, Gaza, Palestine
For me, I do not mind eating such modified crops. However, I will be careful not to much eat it, since its side effects.
