Welcome to BBC Xtra English. Today, Doug and Nouran are talking about an interesting way to reduce pollution.

A local council in the Welsh county of Powys has decided to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save money at the same time.

Councillors decided that a radical new approach was needed to reduce their annual lighting bill of $1 million dollars.

They decided to switch off a total of nine thousand street lights!

But a lot of the people who live in Powys are concerned that this decision will increase petty crime in the city.

They feel scared in the dark and think that Powys will be less safe too.

One of the residents said that she felt she had become a prisoner in her own home as she is too scared to leave her house.

It is a difficult situation for both the council and the residents.

I think they are going about it in a positive way - but they need to have the support of the people. It needs to be an educated choice, people need to stand up and demand change and a fix to the global environmental crisis of which we have yet to see the worst.

I strongly don't agree with this decision, when we want to solve any problem we should avoid as much as we can creating another serious problem such this case.Therefore, I think they can reduce the number of street lights by half until they can use a new tecknowlegy
