A new study by researchers at Bristol University suggests that early humans originated in sub Saharan Africa between 150 and 200 thousand years ago.
Previously, many believed that they moved up to the Mediterranean Sea by following the River Nile.
The researchers said that these early humans managed to survive the long journey because weather conditions were a lot wetter.
Radar images showed that there were fossil river channels between the desert and the Mediterranean Sea.
Scientists believe that these channels were formed from water flowing from volcanic mountains in the desert enabling life to grow.
That water would increase with rainfall from the monsoon rains.
A river would have run at this critical time and provided an alternative route for the travellers.
