actor Paul Newman

Welcome to BBC Xtra English.

Today Amber and Louay talk about celebrity-endorsed products.

Today, many of the products we see being sold in shops and supermarkets are celebrity-endorsed.

Celebrities have lent their names to many different products such as food and drink, clothes and perfume.

'Newman's Own' is a successful brand of foods which made over $200 million for good causes since it was founded 28 years ago.

The brand was set-up after some appreciative guests convinced the famous American actor Paul Newman to mass-produce his own brand of salad cream.

This sparked a glut of celebrity-endorsed products.

'Jane Asher's Party Cakes' is a company run by the British celebrity Jane Asher. She says that she should not simply rubber-stamp a product with her name. The product must also be of a very good quality.

But not all people are convinced. Some of the people we asked said that they were not gullible enough to buy a product just because the branding used a celebrity's name.

They also felt that celebrity-endorsed products were gimmicky and some famous celebrities were simply cashing in on their names.

Others said that they would buy a product if there were no negative connotations and it was advertised by a sports person.

With so much competition in the market, companies use celebrities to try and sell more of their product.

Do you buy celebrity-endorsed products? Why? Write to us in English.

Hi BBC extra.. I think the celebrity-endorsed products are sometimes expensive, we can find a product with the same quality & inexpensive in the same time...so why we waste our money! But if the product support good causes as we see with Paul Newman, the handsome actor, I will buy it joyfully..

Forgive, Hail, UK
I do not buy celebrity endorsed products, unless I feel really I like it. and I think I will be gullible if I buy some thing, just because the celebrity used it..
