Welcome to
BBC Xtra English.
Today Somaya and John are talking about our
ancestors.
Some new research suggests that there has been a breakthrough in the way in which our ancient ancestors can be traced.
The report, from York University in the north of England, says that the movements of mice give us a clue to our origins.
Scientists say that in the past mice often travelled around with people when they set off in search of new places to live. So different mice have evolved in various parts of the world.
The genes of these mice can be studied and classified indicating where they have originated from. The genetic make-up of these mice who accompanied the early human travellers will tell us quite a lot about where our human ancestors travelled from.
BBC new reporter, David Bamford, said that the research indicates that there are mice in New Zealand that originally came from India!
The useful data about mice will contribute to a much bigger study where the DNA of hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world is being catalogued.
