It's carnival time in London this weekend, and the BBC Xtra team are having a big party!

In the United Kingdom the Monday after the last weekend in August is a national holiday, known as Bank Holiday Monday.

Throughout this special weekend, the Notting Hill Carnival explodes into action in West London, which is where BBC Xtra is coming from.

Britain has many other exciting outdoor summer events including the music festival at Glastonbury. Fans generally agree that this is one of the top five summer music events.

Spain, Serbia, Germany and the USA are the other countries that compete to host the biggest and best events in the list of great summer spectacles.

The Sonar music and multi-media arts festival takes place in Barcelona every year.

In Serbia the Exit Festival marks the fall from power of President Milosevic.

There's the Love Parade in Berlin which is a celebration of techno music.

And then there's The Burning Man Festival in the USA where the community come together to celebrate music and the arts in a holistic way.

The carnival in Notting Hill this weekend is vibrant and colourful, includes a street parade with music and lavish costumes.

Most people just come to soak up the atmosphere.

Others celebrate with the African-Caribbean community that is so active at the event.
