Today Doug and Liliane discuss the sporting rivalry between Britain and Australia.

For many years the sporting record of Australia had overshadowed that of the United Kingdom.

At the Olympic Games in Beijing however, the situation is being reversed.

So far, British olympians have won more gold medals than their Australian counterparts.

Some people in Britain refer to Australians as 'Aussies', which is short for Australians.

Some Australians refer to British people as 'Poms'.

It is thought that this word is derived from the term 'Prisoners of Her Majesty', as many of the early settlers in Australia were British convicts.

The success at the Beijing Olympics by the United Kingdom was until now unthinkable for the 'Aussies'.

The 'Poms' new sporting prowess is being viewed with some amazement.

The BBC spoke with some Australian and British sports fans.

One woman said it would be embarrassing if the United Kingdom won more gold medals than Australia.

A British fan said he would 'probably enjoy rubbing their noses in it', meaning he would enjoy making Australians feel bad about their country's lack of success.

Attitudes like these reveal an ongoing rivalry between the two sporting nations.
