The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on TV

Welcome to BBC Xtra English.

Today Louay and Doug talk about the importance of 'image' to leaders around the world.

The British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown is launching his own online television channel in an attempt to improve his image.

'Number 10 TV' is now showing videos of the Prime Minister making important speeches, opening buildings, and meeting the public.

There is also an opportunity to send in your own comments, and to receive a reply direct from Gordon Brown himself.

Political leaders speaking directly to the public may seem like a good idea, but some commentators see this as an attempt to avoid difficult questions from journalists.

British journalist and film-maker Michael Cockerell says services like Number 10 TV are an attempt to partly get rid of people like him.

It is a way to get a political message across unmediated, without the filtration process of journalism.

In many countries the public is getting more and more sophisticated at understanding media messages.

Leaders that attempt to directly promote what they do, and appear insincere will not be believed according to Cockerell.

Why is image important to world leaders? Tell us what you think.

يوم الثلاثاء سنتحدث عن أفلامكم السينمائية المفضلة. لو أنك مخرج سينمائي، فما هي نوعية الأفلام التي ستنتجها؟

Saad in London writes:
Hello I would like to remind you the media coudn't change the real image of any leader. For example Saddam Hussein appeared in media every day for 24 hours, but what's the result? I think honesty is a good way to change the image and get the love of people.

Ahmad from Saudi Arabia emailed to say:
I think that all need to reflect a good image to be loved by the public. Also, I think using an online channel will be used to avoid annoying questions by the journalists.

Ammar from Iraq tells us:

The important thing is for the leader be nice to his people more than to appeal to world opinion. I advise all world leaders, especially the Arab ones to be honest with themselves before making a virtual image to the world.

Ahmed from Egypt emailed to say:
I think it is very important to connect between leaders and people because journalism can be a filtration process to the message from leaders, and people like to speak directly to political leaders. Finally I think if the leader is honest with himself and with people you can make a good image.

Walid Haikal writes:
It is no doubt that the mass media can show the vain as a hero and vice versa, but the public is aware now of the reality and trends of each leader. So, the best way to be a real leader is to help people to solve their problems.

Aadel from Saudi Arabia had this to say:
My idea is about how do people benefit from history, Lessons learnt from the mistakes of previous nations with their Lord, leaders with people, sons with parents and so on.

Thamir Ghani from Iraqi sent us this email:
The issue of equality among human beings I think deserves a lot of attention and focus, especially in light of the growing resentment of people under the suffocating economic conditions and problems of war and politics. The crisis of race, sex, colour and belief remain constant and that causes concern for many explosive crises in the near future
