Welcome to BBC Xtra English.

Today Doug and Louay talk about the music industry.

Increasingly the most successful pop music depends on being available online.

You pay a small fee for a particular track and you download it instantly.

Although millions of songs are sold this way, there are many illegal downloads.

According to some record labels, illegal file sharing is costing the music industry millions of pounds.

Now a new deal has been worked out between the music industry and the internet companies, to stop illegal downloading.

Consumer groups that do not want to see any restriction to free downloading, believe the music industry actually wants to cut off internet customers who illegally download music.

The British government has proposed that internet connections should be made slower for illegal file sharers. In the United States there have been lawsuits against them.

The supporters of free downloading believe that record companies make too much money. The music industry argues that it needs to make money so that it can develop new talent.

Is the music industry making too much money? How can record companies develop talent without income from downloads? Write to us in English.

Abdelatif Ezzoujary from Morocco emailed to say:
I think it is quite impossible to put an end to illegal downloading on the internet because there are personal forums and blogs that post up ready to download songs. It seems that the only solution available for records companies to develop talents without incomes from downloads, is to reduce the price of CD albums. Moreover, a rule prohibiting online publications of songs ought to be issued.
