a couple wasting time

Welcome to BBC Xtra English.

Today Doug and Inas chat about wasting time, being a procrastinator.

Do you find that you leave a bill unpaid for weeks, or put off making that important phone call for days?

If so, you might be showing signs of becoming a serious procrastinator.

Studies from De Paul University, Chicago, in the United States, suggest that it is our high-tech world which creates many of the distractions that get in the way of our daily lives.

Mobile phones and emails are the major causes for procrastination, the study says.

Professor Joseph Ferrari found that 20 per cent of those that took part in his study from Australia, Great Britain and the United States, could be classed as chronic procrastinators.

These are people who wait for three reminders before they pay a bill, they miss concerts and sports events because they were never sufficiently organised to buy the tickets, and will persistently show up late at social functions.

The Professor recommends therapy for chronic procrastinators, because sometimes putting off important decisions can be dangerous. They might delay seeing a doctor or dentist even though they may feel ill, and this could lead to serious health problems.

Do you procrastinate? If so, do you think it has got out of control? Write to us in English.

Wada Moha from Qatar says:
Oh! I sometimes procrastinate, when I am bored or tired, but this is an appropriate excuse, so the problem is, how can I feel or be conscientious?

Bahij from Libya writes:
Procrastination is the main problem of my life, that is the cause of many bad situations and more complicated times for me.

Mohamed from Cairo emailed us with this:
I need therapy, I'm very much a procrastinator.

Kumail Ali from Bahrain wrote to tell us:
In fact, I feel that nowadays life obligates us to procrastinate. Instead of being able to write a mail on paper, our use of computer based emails affects our eyes, brains and even our heart beats. For those who claim that they cannot handle the impact of our digital lives, I suggest time scheduling, or having a rest in front of a countryside pond !!

Rasha Salahty from Fowwa-Kafr el Sheek had this to say:
I sometimes procrastinate, because I am always busy in my job, and I can't organise my time, because my job takes all my time, so I am always under pressure later.

Amira Almrany from Yemen made this comment:
Hi everyone. Usually, I leave my work until the last moment. After that I start working. It's a bad habit. When I start working, there isn't enough time so I work all night. The next day I feel tired.

Ammar from Iraq said:
Yes many times I procrastinate about many things at home for repairs, also to do something with community like visiting relatives or patients or seeing close friends.

Malak Alassality from Jordan writes:
Bit full on with chat on net, I have a lot of wasted time.

Abdelbasit Elshiekh Edris from Sudan comments:
I guess going on Facebook is one of the reasons that turns people into a severe chronic prograstinator at work places. Well I would admit that I'm an email opening addict, and a BBC Extra English listening addict as well.

Nibras from Iraq wanted to tell us:
I finish my duties at work and at home day by day. It is possible that if I just procrastinate for one day that means my life will be like a bazaar, and I will have messed up definitely.

Gais contacted us from Sudan to say:
Sometimes you need to be reminded about a serious matter if you are not dealing with things as a procrastinator.

Saad from London emailed us with this:
Hello. I hate procrastination very much. For example I can't sleep if one lamp needs to replaced or something needs to be fixed. I always have a screwdriver and spanner beside me. Also I can't deal with procrastinators at all.
