Do you think you were born anxious? Cath and Somaya discuss.
Feeling worried, feeling anxious? You might have been born that way!
New research by the University of Wisconsin in the United States suggests that a nervous disposition is something that you get from birth. So, telling someone to calm down might be a waste of time.
The brains of rhesus monkeys, whose brains are similar to adolescent humans, were monitored in three different situations.
The monkeys were studied when they were in cages with their mates, when they were alone, and when they were faced with a human being they were not familiar with.
The monkeys that already appeared anxious, showed increased activity in the part of the brain that deals with fear and aggression. Even in the non stressful situation the anxious monkeys showed a nervous disposition.
This is a useful piece of research for mental health specialists who may now consider offering children therapy to help manage their levels of anxiety. The findings refute the idea that children will just grow out of it.
