Welcome to BBC Xtra English. Today Khalid and Cath answer your questions on the English language.
Mohammed writes from Germany. He wants to know the difference between "I got" and "I've (I have) got". Is one of them wrong?
Cath explains that sometimes "I got" is a lazy way of saying "I've got"; for example "I got a mobile phone". It's something you often hear in spoken English but you shouldn't use it in written English.
But "got"
is also the past tense of "get"; for example: "I got a mobile phone for Christmas". This sentence is correct in written and spoken English.
Zaid from Jordan, Reda and Emad from Libya, and Hussein in Iraq have all sent us emails asking the same thing; How can I improve my English?
London is full of language learners so we asked some passers-by for their tips.
One man speaks four languages. He says "My tip would be to just try to immerse yourself in an environment where everyone is speaking that language".
Of course that's a wonderful thing to do, but it's not always possible.
Another person suggested "Watch TV shows like 'Friends' with subtitles in your own language"
Thanks to all of you for your questions.
