Welcome to BBC Xtra English. Today Doug and Khalid answer your questions on the English language.
Mohammed from the UAE wants to know the difference between 'prefer' and 'preference'.
'Prefer أفضل ' is a verb فعل whereas 'preference' مفضلة is a noun إسم . For example: Doug says he prefers to listen to classical music, but Khalid's preference is jazz music.
Nagi in Malaysia asked about the meaning of the word 'popular' محبوب - رائج - يتمتع بشعبية .
'Popular' is an adjective صفة which describes someone or something that is liked by many people. An example would be: football is a very popular sport.
Ahmed in Egypt wants to know the meaning of the phrase 'to make your mind up'.
The phrase means to decide أن تقرر or to make a decision أن تتخذ قراراً . In the programme Doug can't make up his mind whether to have tea or coffee, and Khalid asks him to make his mind up and decide quickly.
Sayed in Morocco wants to know about songs in English for people learning English at beginners level.
Khalid and Doug advise him to listen to popular songs on the radio, because they get repeated often and that will help him to remember the words.
