Welcome to BBC Xtra English. Today Khalid and Cath answer your questions on the English language.
Amro writing from Sudan wants to know the meaning of the phrase 'so far'.
Cath explains that so far means until now.
Cath and Khalid give some examples:
So far we've recorded 130 programmes in this series.
A common English expression is 'so far, so good'. This means that something has gone well up to this point in time.
If you're half way through an exam and things are going well you might say to yourself 'so far so good'!
Smia from Saudi Arabia wants to know the difference between in time and on time.
Cath explains that in time means early enough for something. So, if you are in time to catch your train you are early enough to catch it.
If you are just in time for something you have no spare time left. A second or minute later and you would be too late!
On time means at the expected time. For example: 'The train arrived on time; it wasn't late, it wasn't early, it was exactly when it was supposed to be'.
