Welcome to BBC Xtra English.
Today Somaya and Abigail are talking about bad translations.

The job of a subtitler is a thankless task. When you watch a foreign film you only notice the subtitler's work when they make a mistake. Perhaps the skill of the subtitler isn't appreciated enough.

A group of British subtitlers has been collecting examples of bad translations in films to show how important their job is.

For example, an inexperienced subtitler for a Danish version of an American film translated Vietnam vet as a animal doctor from Vietnam!! (A vet is another name for an animal doctor, but vet is also short for veteran.) An experienced subtitler would not make a mistake like this.

Have you ever seen a bad translation of English? What did it say? Write to us in English

Zaid, Mosul, Iraq
i saw the film matrix and as i remember the hero of the film called Neo. the subtitler translated the name new (mean something new).

Ammar Al-Hireshi, Saudi Arabia
i have seen many times wrong translations what made me being concious on translation and using dictionaries

Mahmoud, Cairo
yes i saw it in arabic subtitle an american film. one of the actors said where is Ben?(man's name) and the subtitler translated it as where is pen?

Fadhel Al Alawi, Manama, Bahain
With my respect to Extra English, I found the Arabic Translation is not accurate sometimes even though the English accent of the Arabic presenter is perfect. I wish for the Arabic Translator to be more prepared to avoid such inaccurate translation.
Abigail, BBC Xtra English says:
Yes you're right, sometimes we make mistakes. We try to correct them as soon as we find them.

Mohammad, Saudi
It is ironic that an article about "bad" task of other writers has some mistakes. Here are some typos. 1- American film translated was written "tranlated." 2- See was written "say" Subtitler are not only the ones under focus, the editor are too. Thank you though, I like this section and follow it up frequently.
Abigail, BBC Xtra English says:
Yes sorry, Mohammad, we know we do make mistakes sometimes. We must try harder! I have corrected the typo 'translated'. But you also say 'say'is wrong, but here we have got it right. 'What did it say?' means 'what were the words?'

Heba Attia, Egypt
"tranlated Vietnam vet" i think you mean translated not tranlated u forget s
Abigail, BBC Xtra English says:
Oh dear, Heba - you're right! We have corrected it now. Sorry again!!

Ali Nasrey, Baghdad
I heard and read so many errors in translation from English to Arabic, but what about this translation from Arabic to English. I read a report of certain TV media representative who visited Al Imam Abu Al Juwadein in Al Kadhmiyah region of Baghdad. He said: "We've been to Al Kadhmiya and visited the " Father of two Horses" as miss interpretation to the "Abu Al Juwadein", that should be interpreted as Father of Generosity or the Father of two generous sons'. The word Jewad in Arabic has two meanings: Jewad: Horse and Jewwad: Generous. Jewadein: means two of either of the above, but surely not the two horses.
