Welcome to BBC Xtra English. Today Kaz and Rasha answer questions on the English language.
Ahmed in Canada has two questions. He says "I'm always confused about owe; I owe you, you owe me. I also have difficulty saying congratulations."
If you lend me a pound, I owe you a pound. If I buy you dinner in a restaurant, you could feel you owe me dinner another time.
When we talk about money, we don't normally use 'to', so we don't normally say 'I owe a pound to you.'
You can also use owe to thank someone for their help.
I owe you a lot
I owe my good looks to my parents!
The business is a success - and I owe it all to you.
I owe you an explanation.
I think you owe me an apology!
As you can see, in these kinds of sentences we do sometimes use 'to.'
Ahmed also wants to be able to use
congratulations. If someone tells you some
good news, you can just say "
Congratulations!"
"I'm getting married". "Congratulations!"
Or you can use phrases like these. Notice the word 'on':
Congratulations on passing your exam!
Congratulations on winning the poetry prize.
Congratulations on your engagement.
